The Power of Story Telling

I first witnessed the powerful influence of story telling when I was 13 years old, working as a Page at Riverside Library in Windsor. Patrons of all ages would thump down a stack of books on the checkout desk and impart their enthusiasm about discovering the latest tome from their favourite author. It was a measured, three week relationship with these new adventures before a late notice hit their mailbox, but the devoted would usually be back within only a few of my shifts, to eagerly browse the shelves and then rush out with another armful and a smile.

During my six years as a Page, I became enthralled with reading and learning and helping others find exactly what they were looking for. Like memories of a childhood home, I can close my eyes and walk among the stacks, hear the hushed conversations and smell the Lysol we used in the annual task of methodically wiping down all of the books, every, last, one. Now when cocktail conversations turn to hidden talents, I’m compelled to cite my knowledge of the Dewey-decimal system. I admit it’s not as exciting as skydiving or riding a unicycle, but it’s founded in years of working among familiar friends and knowing exactly where to find them.

On occasion, when you visit HWard Communication Inc., our four-legged receptionist will come out to greet you. There will be kisses involved, and you may find yourself suddenly speaking in a squeaky, high-pitched voice asking her questions she can’t answer. Please comply with her fuzzy antics –  we only pay her in small, bone-shaped cookies.
